Spring Break 2014, my mom and I traveled to Washington, D.C. for a week-long adventure! On our first day in D.C. we went on a memorial walk. I highly recommend starting any trip to D.C. with a walk among these amazing monuments.

The Washington Monument is a tall white obelisk in memory of the first President of the United States, George Washington. When we were there it was under construction so we were unable to go inside; however, we would like to return someday and try again.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a long black wall with the names of the veterans of the Vietnam War carved into it. While there, visitors can look up their family and friends who died during the war in a book to find them on the wall and do a rubbing of the name.

The Korean War Veterans Memorial is an open area filled with detailed stainless-steel statues of United States military troops who served in Korea.

Along the water’s edge visitors will find paved walkways, paddle boats, and at night you can take a dinner cruise on the river. My mom and I dined aboard the Odyssey and loved every minute of it. The food was great and the captain invited us to join him. I got to sit in the captain’s chair, wearing the captain’s hat, and watch the men guide the boat. It was a fantastic first day in the capitol!
