Atop The Royal Mile, in Edinburgh, Scotland, stands the forbidding, stone edifice of Edinburgh Castle. Built sometime in the twelfth century, the rock on which the castle stands has been inhabited since before the Iron Age. Once occupied by royalty, today the castle is home to several museums including, The National War Museum, The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Museum, and The Royal Scots Regimental Museum. Dedicated to Scotland's armed forces, these military museums bear evidence to the best and worst of military life. In honor of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, being held at the castle from August 3, 2018 to August 25, 2018, below are a selection of photographs depicting the pain and courage of war from artwork displayed within the castle.
